Rex Rats are a coat variety of the domesticated Norway rat, Rattus norvegicus domestica, distinguished by their curly or wavy fur and characteristically crimped whiskers caused by a rex gene mutation. Their nutritional requirements are identical to those of standard-coated fancy rats, though some keepers report that Rex Rats experiencing periods of heavy molt or coat regrowth benefit from slightly elevated protein intake to support keratin production. As true omnivores, rats require a balanced diet that includes carbohydrates, moderate protein, low to moderate fat, and a broad spectrum of vitamins and minerals to maintain organ function, immune health, and proper body condition throughout their relatively short lifespan.
Protein requirements for adult Rex Rats fall in the range of fourteen to sixteen percent of the total diet by dry weight for maintenance, with young, growing, pregnant, or nursing rats needing closer to eighteen to twenty percent. Protein quality matters as much as quantity, and animal-based protein sources such as cooked egg, cooked chicken, and dried insects provide superior amino acid profiles compared to plant-based alternatives alone. Excessive protein intake in adult rats has been linked to increased incidence of kidney disease, which is already one of the most common age-related conditions in domesticated rats, so moderation is essential once a rat reaches full maturity at roughly six months of age.
Fat content should remain between four and eight percent of the total diet for adult Rex Rats. While fat is a concentrated energy source and supports fat-soluble vitamin absorption, domesticated rats are highly prone to obesity, particularly when housed in standard cages that limit exercise opportunity. Excess body fat contributes to cardiovascular strain, respiratory difficulty, mammary tumor development, and reduced overall lifespan. Male Rex Rats are especially susceptible to weight gain as they age and become less active, so dietary fat should be monitored closely after the first year.
Micronutrient needs are often underestimated by new rat keepers. Calcium and phosphorus must be maintained at a ratio close to one-point-two to one for optimal bone health, and vitamin D3 is necessary for calcium absorption. B vitamins support neurological function and energy metabolism, while vitamin A and vitamin E serve as antioxidants that protect against cellular damage. A well-formulated lab block typically provides a complete micronutrient profile, but rats fed primarily on seed mixes or homemade diets may develop subclinical deficiencies over time without targeted supplementation.
