African Pygmy Hedgehogs are obligate insectivores in the wild, consuming a varied diet of beetles, caterpillars, earthworms, and other invertebrates supplemented by occasional plant matter and small vertebrates. In captivity their dietary requirements translate to a high-protein, moderate-fat, low-fiber formula that closely approximates the macronutrient profile of their natural prey. Protein should constitute roughly thirty to thirty-five percent of the diet by dry weight, fat should fall between ten and fifteen percent, and fiber should remain below five percent. Deviating significantly from these ratios leads to predictable health consequences including obesity, hepatic lipidosis, and malnutrition.
Unlike rodents or lagomorphs, hedgehogs do not rely on cellulose fermentation to extract nutrients from plant fiber. Their relatively short digestive tract processes animal proteins and chitin efficiently but handles large volumes of indigestible plant fiber poorly, often resulting in loose stools or reduced nutrient absorption. This distinction is critical when selecting commercial foods, because products designed for herbivorous small mammals such as rabbits or guinea pigs are entirely inappropriate for hedgehogs despite being shelved in the same section of a pet store.
Chitin, the structural polysaccharide found in insect exoskeletons, plays a unique role in hedgehog nutrition. It functions as a specialized form of dietary fiber that supports healthy gut motility without the bulk associated with plant-based fiber. A diet devoid of chitin-bearing insects forces the digestive system to rely exclusively on processed ingredients for motility support, which is suboptimal over the long term. Incorporating live or dried insects alongside a quality kibble base ensures the hedgehog receives chitin in a biologically appropriate form.
Calcium and phosphorus balance is another area requiring careful attention. Hedgehogs are susceptible to metabolic bone disease when calcium intake is insufficient relative to phosphorus, a problem compounded by the naturally skewed calcium-to-phosphorus ratio found in many common feeder insects such as mealworms. Dusting insects with a calcium supplement or choosing insect species with more favorable mineral profiles helps maintain the ideal ratio of roughly two parts calcium to one part phosphorus.
