Even species that are not overtly aggressive but are significantly larger and faster-moving can intimidate Emerald Catfish into permanent hiding, which defeats the purpose of keeping a species prized for its active social foraging behavior.

Keeping Emerald Catfish in an appropriate school size is not optional for their wellbeing. A group of six is the working minimum, but eight to ten individuals produces noticeably more natural and confident behavior. In smaller groups, these fish tend to be reclusive and anxious, spending most of their time hidden behind decorations. Fast-moving midwater fish can intercept sinking pellets before they reach the substrate if they learn to associate feeding time with food descending from above. Feeding the community fish at one end of the tank while dropping sinking food for the catfish at the opposite end helps mitigate this. Alternatively, feeding the Emerald Catfish after lights-out takes advantage of their crepuscular nature and reduces competition from diurnal species that become inactive in darkness.
