Cardinal tetra eggs are extremely small, nearly transparent, and highly sensitive to light. After spawning, the eggs typically hatch within 24 to 36 hours depending on water temperature. During this initial period, it is critical to keep the breeding tank in near-total darkness, as cardinal tetra eggs and newly hatched fry are photosensitive and exposure to bright light can be fatal. Covering the tank with dark cloth or placing it in a dimly lit room is standard practice among experienced breeders.
Once the eggs hatch, the tiny fry will remain attached to the surfaces where the eggs were deposited, absorbing their yolk sacs. At this stage they are virtually invisible to the naked eye and completely immobile. There is no need to feed them during this phase, as the yolk sac provides all the nutrition they require for the first two to three days of life. Resist the urge to disturb the tank or check on them frequently, as vibrations and sudden light changes can stress or kill the fragile fry.
Water quality during these first hours sets the foundation for survival rates. The breeding tank should have been prepared with very soft, acidic water that mimics the blackwater conditions of the cardinal tetra's native habitat in the upper Rio Negro basin. Filtration should be limited to a gentle air-driven sponge filter to avoid creating currents that could buffet the tiny fry. Any ammonia spike at this stage can wipe out an entire clutch, so the tank should have been fully cycled before spawning was attempted.
Parent fish should be removed immediately after spawning is complete. Cardinal tetras are egg scatterers with no parental instincts, and they will readily consume their own eggs and fry if given the opportunity. Carefully net the adults and return them to their main tank, taking care not to disturb the eggs that have settled on plants, spawning mops, or the tank floor.
