Mastitis, an infection of the mammary glands, is a postpartum complication that breeders should watch for. Gently palpating the mammary glands daily during the nursing period helps detect early changes. Mild cases may respond to warm compresses and continued nursing, but more significant infections require veterinary treatment with appropriate antibiotics.

The dam's emotional wellbeing during the postpartum period is also important. Belgian Malinois dams are typically attentive mothers, but first-time mothers may be anxious, and some dams show signs of postpartum behavioral changes including restlessness, overprotectiveness, or in rare cases, disinterest in the litter. Providing a calm, secure environment, limiting visitors during the first week, and offering the dam gentle reassurance and breaks from the whelping box for brief outdoor time all support a healthy adjustment to motherhood.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

Responsible breeding of Belgian Malinois carries weight beyond the production of a single litter. The breed's surge in popularity, driven in part by its visibility in military and law enforcement roles, has led to increased breeding by individuals without adequate knowledge of the breed's temperament, working requirements, and genetic health. This trend has contributed to a growing number of Malinois in rescue and shelter systems, often surrendered by owners who were unprepared for the breed's intensity. Responsible breeders work against this trend by prioritizing placement in appropriate homes over profit.

Every breeding decision should be made with the goal of producing puppies that are healthier, structurally sounder, and temperamentally more stable than their parents.
