The spleen itself may become so enlarged that it causes abdominal discomfort or, rarely, is at risk of traumatic rupture. The treatability and prognosis of ferret splenomegaly span the entire spectrum from requiring no intervention to being incurable, depending on etiology. Benign extramedullary hematopoiesis, the most common cause, typically needs only monitoring. Infectious causes may resolve with appropriate antimicrobial therapy. Splenic tumors may be managed with splenectomy, chemotherapy, or palliative care depending on the specific type and extent of disease.
