Yew toxicity is an extremely serious and often fatal poisoning that occurs when dogs ingest parts of yew plants from the genus Taxus. Death can occur within minutes to hours of ingestion, often with minimal warning signs preceding cardiac arrest. Some dogs who ingest yew are found dead without any observed symptoms, having succumbed to acute cardiac failure. Despite the grave prognosis associated with yew toxicity, dogs who receive immediate veterinary care and survive the initial hours following ingestion may recover. Treatment focuses on decontamination to remove as much plant material as possible from the gastrointestinal tract and aggressive cardiac support to manage the potentially fatal arrhythmias caused by taxine alkaloids. Prevention through awareness and elimination of yew from areas where dogs have access is the most effective strategy for protecting dogs from this deadly plant toxicity.
