Seasonal flank alopecia is a distinctive skin condition in dogs characterized by recurring episodes of hair loss that typically occurs on both sides of the body along the flank region. This condition is also sometimes referred to as cyclic flank alopecia or recurrent flank alopecia due to its predictable pattern of occurrence and resolution. Unlike many other causes of hair loss in dogs, seasonal flank alopecia is primarily a cosmetic concern and does not cause itching, pain, or significant discomfort to affected animals. The condition is well-recognized in veterinary dermatology and tends to follow predictable seasonal patterns that correlate with changes in daylight hours.
The exact cause of seasonal flank alopecia remains incompletely understood, though research strongly suggests it relates to abnormal responses in hair follicle cycling triggered by changes in photoperiod or the length of daylight exposure. The condition appears to involve disruption of the normal hair growth cycle, particularly affecting the anagen or active growth phase of hair follicles. Melatonin, a hormone naturally produced by the pineal gland in response to darkness, is believed to play a significant role in regulating these hair growth cycles. Dogs affected by this condition may have altered melatonin production or abnormal follicular responses to melatonin signaling.
Seasonal flank alopecia predominantly affects certain breeds, suggesting a genetic component to susceptibility. Boxers, English Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Airedale Terriers, and Schnauzers are among the breeds most commonly diagnosed with this condition. The hair loss typically appears as well-demarcated, symmetrical patches on both flanks, and the exposed skin often becomes noticeably hyperpigmented or darkened. Episodes most commonly occur during late fall through early spring in the Northern Hemisphere when daylight hours are shortest, though some dogs experience hair loss during different seasons or develop an irregular pattern over time.
Despite its dramatic appearance, seasonal flank alopecia carries an excellent prognosis and does not impact the overall health or longevity of affected dogs. Many dogs experience spontaneous regrowth of hair as the seasons change and daylight hours increase. While treatment is not medically necessary, some owners elect to pursue therapy with melatonin supplementation to encourage faster hair regrowth or prevent future episodes. Veterinary consultation is recommended to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other causes of hair loss that may require more aggressive treatment.
