Lion's Jaw, known medically as craniomandibular osteopathy (CMO), is a non-neoplastic, proliferative bone disease that affects the mandible and other bones of the skull in growing dogs. The condition is characterized by irregular, excessive new bone formation that replaces normal bone tissue, leading to bilateral swelling of the jaw that gives the affected dog's face a broad, lion-like appearance. This distinctive visual presentation is the origin of the condition's common name.
The disease was first described in veterinary literature in the 1950s, primarily in Scottish terrier breeds. Since then, it has been identified across a wider range of breeds, though it remains most prevalent among terrier lines. CMO is a self-limiting condition, meaning it typically ceases to progress once the dog reaches skeletal maturity, usually between 11 and 13 months of age. However, the period of active bone proliferation can be intensely painful and debilitating for the affected puppy.
The underlying mechanism involves cyclical episodes of bone resorption and irregular new bone deposition along the periosteum of the mandible, tympanic bullae, and occasionally the long bones. Unlike cancerous bone growth, CMO does not metastasize or invade surrounding soft tissues. The abnormal bone that forms is structurally disorganized, consisting of woven bone rather than the organized lamellar bone found in healthy skeletal tissue.
While CMO is not life-threatening in most cases, severe presentations can significantly impair a dog's ability to open its mouth, eat, and drink. In rare instances, the proliferative bone growth can be so extensive that it fuses the temporomandibular joint, permanently restricting jaw mobility. Early recognition and appropriate supportive care are essential for managing pain and maintaining adequate nutrition during the active phase of the disease.
