The Ukrainian Levkoy is a medium-sized cat with a distinctive angular appearance that sets them apart from other hairless breeds. Males typically weigh between 10-12 pounds, while females are slightly smaller at 8-10 pounds. The body is medium-length with a lean, muscular build and fine to medium bone structure. Unlike the cobby, rounded build of some hairless breeds, the Ukrainian Levkoy has a more elongated, angular silhouette. The chest is moderately broad, and the back shows a slight arch, contributing to their elegant profile. Their body feels warm to the touch, typically around 102-105Β°F (39-40.5Β°C), as they maintain higher body temperature to compensate for lacking insulating fur.
The head is the breed's most distinctive feature, displaying an angular, wedge-shaped profile that's quite different from the rounded heads of breeds like the Sphynx. The head is longer than it is wide, with a flat skull and prominent cheekbones. The profile is nearly straight from forehead to nose tip, creating clean, angular lines. The muzzle is well-defined with a strong chin and prominent whisker pads. This angular head structure gives Ukrainian Levkoy cats a unique, almost alien appearance that some find strikingly beautiful.
The ears are the breed's other defining characteristic β they fold inward and downward in a distinctive way that differs from Scottish Fold ears. Ukrainian Levkoy ears fold from about one-third of the way up the ear, creating an inward curve rather than forward fold. The ears are large at the base and set high and wide on the head. The degree of fold varies between individuals, with some showing subtle curves while others display more pronounced inward folding. Kittens are born with straight ears that begin folding at around 3-4 weeks of age, with the fold continuing to develop over several months. Not all Ukrainian Levkoy kittens develop folded ears β some have straight ears and are called "straights," still valuable for breeding programs.
The eyes are large, almond-shaped, and slightly slanted, contributing to the exotic appearance. Eye color can be any color and doesn't necessarily correlate with skin color, with blue, green, amber, and odd-eyed variations all occurring. The eyes are expressive and give these cats an intelligent, alert appearance. Many Ukrainian Levkoy cats appear to be squinting or looking through half-closed lids, adding to their unique expression.
The defining feature is, of course, the hairlessness or near-hairlessness of the skin. Most Ukrainian Levkoy cats are completely bald with warm, elastic skin that feels like heated chamois leather or soft rubber. The skin is extensively wrinkled, particularly around the head, neck, legs, and abdomen. These wrinkles are a breed characteristic and give the cats their distinctive appearance. Some individuals have a very fine, barely visible down covering parts or all of the body, feeling like warm peach fuzz. This coating is so fine it's often invisible to the eye but can be felt when touching the cat.
The skin displays all the colors and patterns that would appear on a furred cat. Common colors include white (pink skin), black (dark gray skin), blue (lighter gray skin), red (peachy skin), and cream (pale peach skin). Patterns including tabby, tortoiseshell, pointed, and bi-color are visible on the skin as variations in pigmentation. The whiskers and eyebrows are typically absent or very sparse and often curly or broken when present. The legs are long and slender with oval paws, and the toes may have prominent webbing between them. The tail is long, whip-like, and tapering, typically completely hairless or with minimal hair at the tip. Overall, the Ukrainian Levkoy presents as an exotic, angular cat whose unique combination of hairlessness and folded ears creates an appearance unlike any other breed.
