Products containing kanamycin, nitrofurazone, or oxytetracycline target the gram-negative bacteria typically responsible. Follow package directions carefully regarding dosing and duration. Completing the full treatment course matters even if symptoms improve before treatment ends, as incomplete treatment allows resistant bacteria to survive.
Aquarium salt at one tablespoon per five gallons supports fish during treatment by helping them maintain osmotic balance and promoting slime coat health. Salt also has mild antibacterial properties. However, some fish species and most invertebrates are sensitive to salt, so know your tank inhabitants before adding any.

Monitor progress daily. Improvement signs include increased activity, returning appetite, and fading of red coloration. Worsening signs include spreading redness, increased lethargy, refusal to eat, and development of additional symptoms like swelling or scale protrusion. If the fish worsens despite treatment after several days, the infection may be resistant to your medication, and trying a different antibacterial may help.
Section 5 Tank Management
If you are treating in the main tank, remove activated carbon from your filter as it absorbs medications. Keep biological media in place to maintain your nitrogen cycle, but monitor ammonia and nitrite levels during treatment since some antibiotics can affect beneficial bacteria. After treatment ends and your fish recovers, focus on preventing recurrence. Evaluate what conditions allowed the infection to develop. Were you behind on water changes? Was the tank overstocked?
