Section 1 Overview

Mystery snails are freshwater snails popular in the hobby as algae eaters and tank cleaners. They're colorful, peaceful, and genuinely useful in an aquarium. If you're looking for a cleanup crew member, a mystery snail is a solid choice. They're not complicated to care for, and they coexist peacefully with most fish and plants.

They come in multiple color varieties—gold, black, white, blue, and patterns. Some are solid colors, others have intricate shells. They're visually interesting to watch as they cruise around the tank, grazing on algae and detritus. Kids especially find them captivating—you can literally watch them eat.

Mystery snails are prosobranchs, a type of snail with a trapdoor-like covering called an operculum. This operculum seals them in their shell when they retreat, protecting them from drying out or being eaten. You'll see this flap open and close as the snail moves in and out of its shell.

The appeal of mystery snails is practical. They eat algae, including some forms that other algae eaters don't touch. They clean up uneaten food and dead plant matter. They aerate the substrate as they move through it. In a balanced tank, they're genuinely useful members of the cleanup crew.

They're also peaceful addition to community tanks. Unlike some fish that might nip plants or harass other creatures, mystery snails mind their business. They're compatible with peaceful fish, plants, and other peaceful invertebrates. The main limitation is that they're food to some larger fish, but that's about their only compatibility issue.

Section 2 Natural Habitat And Origins

Mystery snails come from South America, primarily from the Amazon region and surrounding areas. They live in freshwater rivers, streams, and flood plains. The water is warm, usually 70 to 82 degrees. There's often tannins from decomposing vegetation, making the water slightly acidic. They're bottom dwellers that graze on algae, plants, and detritus.

In the wild, mystery snails are part of the cleanup ecosystem. They eat dead plant matter, algae, and decaying food. They're ecological recyclers, turning waste into growth and energy. This is the same role they play in aquariums, which is why they're useful in tanks.

The substrate in their natural habitat is usually sandy or muddy. They burrow slightly as they move through it, which aeration they provide helps maintain a healthy substrate layer. In aquariums, they do the same thing—slowly working through the sand or gravel, mixing it and removing trapped detritus.

They're solitary animals in the wild, though they can coexist without issue. They're not territorial. Multiple snails in the same area simply ignore each other and continue foraging. This is why you can keep multiple mystery snails in the same tank without problems.

Mysterium snails arrived in the aquarium hobby in the 1980s and became very popular. They were initially called mystery snails because their origin and breeding habits in captivity were mysterious. Since then, the mystery has been mostly solved—they breed readily in favorable conditions, and wild-caught specimens are increasingly rare as captive breeding is now the norm.

Understanding that mystery snails are scavengers and cleaners in nature explains their role in aquariums. They're not fish that need special conditions—they need what they need for basic survival, and they'll do their job of cleaning without complaint. They're low-maintenance inhabitants of freshwater tanks.

Section 3 Tank Requirements And Setup

Mystery snails need a minimum of 10 gallons for one or two snails, with every additional snail adding another 5 gallons. So a 20-gallon tank comfortably holds 4 snails. They're small creatures that don't need enormous space, but more room is always better because it means more surface area to forage and more stability in water conditions.

Water temperature should be 68 to 82 degrees, ideally around 72 to 78. They're sensitive to extreme cold. If the temperature drops below 68, they'll slow significantly and might stop eating. Below 60 degrees, they become dormant and can die. Keep them warm—a heater is recommended for most home aquariums.

Water pH should be 6.0 to 8.0. They prefer neutral to slightly alkaline, around 7.0 to 7.5. They're not fussy, but they do better in water with some hardness to support shell growth. Very soft water can cause shell deterioration. If you have naturally soft water, add minerals or use regular water changes with slightly harder water to maintain shell health.

Current from a filter is fine. They're not strong swimmers and they prefer gentle water movement. A standard aquarium filter provides what they need. They don't appreciate high flow or turbulent conditions.

Substrate should be soft enough that the snails can burrow slightly. Sand is ideal. Fine gravel works. Avoid sharp gravel that might damage their soft body. They'll spend time moving through the substrate looking for food, so comfort matters.

Plants work well with mystery snails. They eat some plant matter, but they're far less destructive than fish that uproot and demolish vegetation. You'll see some plant nibbling, especially of soft, new growth, but established planted tanks coexist fine with mystery snails. If plant preservation is critical, accept some losses.

Hiding spots aren't essential but they're appreciated. Driftwood, caves, or dense plants give snails places to retreat. They're not shy creatures, but they do appreciate options for shelter. One physical requirement is important: mystery snails need to reach the water surface. They breathe air and need to come to the surface occasionally. Make sure your tank isn't sealed or blocked in a way that prevents surface access.

Section 4 Diet And Feeding

Mystery snails eat algae, plant matter, and detritus. In a well-established aquarium, they find enough food naturally without supplemental feeding. Algae on the glass and rocks, dead plant leaves, and uneaten food all become snail meals. If you have a healthy tank bioload, your snails eat without you actively feeding them.

If algae is minimal or the tank is very clean, supplemental feeding helps. Blanched vegetables like zucchini, spinach, and cucumber can be dropped in. The snail will spend hours grazing on a zucchini piece. Remove uneaten portions after a day to prevent water quality decline. Feeding vegetables 2 to 3 times a week is sufficient.

Commercial snail pellets and algae wafers are available. Some snails eat them eagerly, others ignore them. They're not necessary if you're feeding vegetables or if the tank has adequate natural food. If you use them, offer small amounts and remove uneaten pieces to prevent water fouling.

Protein isn't a major part of their diet, but they'll occasionally eat small dead animals or fish food. Don't overfeed fish thinking snails will clean up excess. Uneaten food creates more problems than snails can solve. Feed fish appropriately and the snails will find what's left.

Calcium is important for shell health. If your snails' shells look thin or damaged, they might not be getting enough calcium. In hard water, there's usually adequate calcium. In soft water, you might need to supplement. Calcium supplements designed for aquariums work, or you can use crushed cuttlebone or calcium-rich decorations.

One feeding note: don't assume a mystery snail is dead if it's not moving. They often stay in their shell for days, especially when stressed or resting. If the snail hasn't moved in a week and smells like rotting flesh, it's likely dead. Otherwise, patience usually shows it's alive. They're not always active.

Section 5 Behavior And Compatibility

Mystery snails are peaceful, slow-moving creatures that spend their time grazing on surfaces. You'll watch them creeping along the glass, over rocks, and through plants. They're methodical and thorough—they don't rush, but they cover ground consistently.

They're primarily nocturnal but will feed during the day too. You'll see more activity in the evening and at night, but daytime foraging happens regularly. If the lights are on and the snail is visible, it's probably eating.

They're solitary in the sense that they don't interact socially with other snails. Multiple snails in the same tank simply coexist, each doing its own thing. They don't fight, herd together, or show social behavior. They're just independent foragers sharing the same space.

Compatibility is excellent with peaceful fish. Tetras, rasboras, corydoras, peaceful cichlids, and most community fish coexist beautifully with mystery snails. Avoid aggressive fish that might attack the snails. Crayfish and crabs will eat snails if given opportunity. Some fish like pufferfish and certain cichlids specifically target snails as food.

One compatibility note: mystery snails sometimes lose their shells to predation. A snail that's been attacked by a fish might be vulnerable with exposed soft tissue. In rare cases, a fish-eating predator will attack a snail, and the snail survives but loses its shell. If this happens, the snail might survive as a slug if kept in proper conditions. More often, the exposed snail becomes vulnerable to infection and dies.

Mystery snails are compatible with most plants, though some nibbling occurs. Hardy plants like anubias and java fern are virtually untouched. Soft stem plants sometimes get eaten. If you want pristine plants, accept some leaf loss to snail grazing. It's usually minimal.

They're peaceful with other invertebrates like shrimp in freshwater tanks. The only limitation is that very small shrimp fry might be eaten, but adult shrimp coexist peacefully. They're genuinely peaceful community members.

Section 6 Health And Lifespan

Mystery snails typically live 3 to 5 years in good conditions. Some live longer with excellent care. Lifespan depends on temperature stability, water quality, and food availability. A snail in a cold, neglected tank dies within a year. A snail in warm, well-maintained conditions lives for years.

Health issues in mystery snails are relatively uncommon if conditions are good. The primary causes of death are extreme temperature fluctuations, very poor water quality, or parasitic infections from wild-caught specimens.

Shell damage is the most visible health concern. A snail with a broken or eroded shell might be suffering from inadequate calcium or injury. If the shell is intact but the snail isn't moving, it might be hibernating or resting. Don't assume it's dead immediately.

Parasites affect wild-caught snails especially. These can cause wasting, discoloration, or visible abnormalities. Quarantine any new snails before adding to an established tank. Most captive-bred snails are parasite-free, but caution is wise.

Fungal or bacterial infections occasionally affect snails, usually if they're stressed or injured. A snail with visible lesions, unusual color changes, or foul smell is likely infected. Improve water quality and if possible quarantine the snail. There's no guaranteed cure, but good conditions sometimes allow recovery.

Empty shells in the tank aren't always signs of dead snails. Sometimes snails die and decompose, leaving the shell. Sometimes a shell is simply abandoned by a living snail (snails can leave their shells under extreme stress, but this is rare). If you find an empty shell, check around the tank for the living snail.

Watch for signs of distress: excessive time inside the shell, lack of movement over many days, visible damage or lesions, foul smell, or abnormal color. These indicate something's wrong. Check water parameters and improve conditions. Most snail health issues resolve with better care—they're hardy creatures.
