A healthy bicolor blenny is active, perches openly on rockwork, grazes regularly, responds to feeding cues, and displays vivid two-tone coloration. The eyes should be clear and bright, the body should be well-filled without being bloated, and the fish should move between hiding spots and grazing areas with confident, quick movements. Prevention in a reef tank follows the same principles as any marine system. Stable water parameters maintained through regular testing and water changes, proper quarantine of new fish before adding them to the display tank, a varied and appropriate diet, and avoiding overstocking. For bicolor blennies specifically, ensuring adequate algae availability and rockwork complexity addresses their unique needs beyond basic water quality. A blenny that has good food sources and feels secure in its territory is a blenny with a strong immune system.
When problems arise, act quickly. Small fish decline faster than large fish, and a bicolor blenny showing symptoms today may be in serious trouble by tomorrow. Many health problems in reef fish resolve when the underlying stressor, usually water quality or aggression from tankmates, is identified and corrected.
