It is a fish whose survival depends on constant grazing.

Siamese algae eaters, Crossocheilus oblongus, come from flowing rivers of Thailand and Malaysia. They inhabit clear, well-oxygenated water with rocky substrates covered in biofilm and various algae types. Their ability to consume black beard algae comes from natural adaptation to eating tougher plant material that other fish avoid. In the wild, they are part of a guild of herbivorous fish that keeps surfaces grazed.

Amano shrimp, Caridina multidentata, are native to Japan and Taiwan, inhabiting freshwater streams that flow into the ocean. In the wild, they are detritivores and algae grazers that methodically pick through every surface in their habitat. Their effectiveness against hair algae and thread algae reflects this natural behavior of persistent, thorough grazing.

Nerite snails encompass several species from coastal and freshwater habitats across the tropics. Their rasping mouthpart is remarkably effective at removing diatom films, green spot algae, and soft green algae from glass, rocks, and hardscape. Like Amano shrimp, nerites require brackish water for larval development, so they do not reproduce in freshwater tanks, which many keepers consider an advantage.

The common thread across all effective algae eaters is that algae consumption is central to their natural ecology, not incidental. Species that eat algae in the wild as a primary food source continue doing so reliably in captivity. Species marketed as algae eaters but that are actually omnivores tend to abandon algae once they discover prepared foods at feeding time.

Section 3 Tank Requirements And Setup

Tank requirements for algae eaters vary by species, but the general principle is that the tank needs to support both the grazer and enough biological surface area to sustain natural biofilm growth. A pristine, brand-new tank with no algae will starve dedicated grazers like otocinclus. Wait until a tank is mature enough to have visible biofilm before adding specialized algae eaters.

Otocinclus need a minimum of 10 gallons for a group of four to six, the minimum school size for this social species. They require stable, well-cycled tanks with temperatures between 72 and 79 degrees Fahrenheit, pH of 6.0 to 7.5, and soft to moderate hardness. Strong filtration with good oxygenation suits them, but avoid excessive current that exhausts these small fish. The tank must have established biofilm because otocinclus do not transition easily to prepared foods alone.

Siamese algae eaters grow to five or six inches and need a minimum of 30 gallons, with 55 or more appropriate for long-term housing. They prefer temperatures of 75 to 80 degrees, neutral pH, and moderate flow. These are active swimmers that need horizontal space and appreciate varied surfaces for grazing. They do well in planted tanks where their consumption keeps leaves clean.

Amano shrimp thrive in groups of six or more in tanks as small as 10 gallons. They tolerate a wide range from 65 to 80 degrees, pH 6.0 to 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. The critical requirement is stable water quality with zero ammonia and nitrite, as shrimp are more sensitive to chemistry spikes than most fish. Provide plenty of surface area through plants, moss, and hardscape for grazing.

Nerite snails work in tanks as small as five gallons and tolerate conditions from 68 to 85 degrees and pH 6.5 to 8.5. They prefer harder, more alkaline water for shell health. One or two nerites per ten gallons provides effective glass and hardscape cleaning without overgrazing available algae.

Otocinclus are the most vulnerable to starvation because their small size and high metabolism demand constant grazing. Supplement their diet with blanched zucchini, cucumber, and spirulina wafers placed on the substrate near their grazing areas. Some keepers grow algae on rocks in a separate container under strong light and rotate them into the main tank, which provides a renewable natural food source. If your otocinclus appear thin or lethargic, they are likely not getting enough food regardless of how green your tank looks to you.

Siamese algae eaters accept a wider range of foods and become less dependent on algae as they mature. They readily eat sinking pellets, frozen foods, and blanched vegetables alongside their algae grazing. The challenge with mature Siamese algae eaters is actually the opposite of starvation. Well-fed adults often reduce their algae consumption significantly because prepared foods are easier and more calorie-dense. Managing their supplemental feeding to keep them slightly motivated to graze balances nutrition with continued algae control.

Amano shrimp are efficient scavengers that eat algae, biofilm, detritus, and leftover fish food. In a well-stocked community tank, they often get enough nutrition from normal feeding without targeted supplementation. In lightly stocked or shrimp-only tanks, provide algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein sources like frozen bloodworms. They graze continuously regardless of supplemental feeding, which is what makes them such reliable algae controllers.

Nerite snails are the lowest-maintenance algae eaters from a feeding perspective. They graze continuously on hard surfaces and in most established tanks find adequate natural food. In very clean tanks with minimal algae, supplement with blanched vegetables placed against the glass or algae wafers. Their dietary needs are modest and their grazing is persistent, making them the closest thing to a set-and-forget algae management option available.

Section 5 Behavior And Compatibility

Algae eaters as a group tend to be peaceful, unobtrusive tank inhabitants that go about their work without causing problems for other fish. This makes them compatible with the vast majority of community species. However, each type has behavioral characteristics worth understanding before you add them to your setup.

Otocinclus are shy, social fish that spend their time attached to surfaces, grazing in small groups. They are active during the day and visible enough to enjoy watching, but they never interfere with other fish. Their only compatibility concern is that they are small and defenseless, making them vulnerable to predation by anything large enough to eat a one-and-a-half-inch fish. Keep them with peaceful community species and avoid housing them with large cichlids or aggressive fish that might harass them.

Siamese algae eaters are more active and visible than otocinclus, swimming through the tank and grazing on various surfaces throughout the day. Young specimens are model community citizens, but adults can become territorial toward their own species and occasionally chase other bottom-dwelling fish. Keep only one Siamese algae eater per tank unless the tank is large enough for each to establish separate territory, typically 55 gallons or more for two. They coexist well with mid-water and surface-dwelling community fish.

Amano shrimp are active grazers that work around the clock, methodically picking over every surface in the tank. They are completely peaceful and ignore other tank inhabitants. The compatibility concern runs in the opposite direction. Many fish eat shrimp, so Amano shrimp need to be housed with species small enough or peaceful enough to leave them alone. Tetras, rasboras, small barbs, corydoras, and other community fish work well. Avoid cichlids, large gouramis, and any predatory species.

Nerite snails are the most compatible algae eaters available because they interact with nothing. They graze slowly across surfaces, ignore other inhabitants completely, and cannot be harassed by anything that does not physically crush their shells. They work in virtually any community tank and their only behavioral quirk is a tendency to climb out of uncovered tanks, so a lid is recommended.

Combining multiple algae eater types works well because they occupy different niches and do not compete with each other. Otocinclus graze flat surfaces and plant leaves. Amano shrimp work through fine-textured algae on plants and hardscape. Nerites clean glass and hard surfaces. Siamese algae eaters handle the tough stuff like black beard algae. Together, they provide comprehensive coverage without territorial conflict because each type focuses on different surfaces and algae forms.

Section 6 Health And Lifespan

Lifespans across popular algae-eating species vary considerably. Otocinclus typically live three to five years with proper care. Siamese algae eaters can reach eight to ten years. Amano shrimp live two to three years on average. Nerite snails survive one to three years in freshwater, though some individuals last longer. These lifespans assume adequate nutrition, stable water conditions, and housing with compatible tankmates.

The most common health issue across algae-eating species is starvation, particularly in otocinclus. New keepers add them to a tank, assume the algae will feed them, and gradually lose fish over weeks as natural algae is consumed faster than it regrows. A visibly thin otocinclus with a concave belly is a fish that has been slowly starving, and reversing that condition requires immediate supplemental feeding and patience. Prevention is far easier than cure. Start supplementing with vegetable matter and spirulina wafers from the day you add them.

Amano shrimp are sensitive to water quality in ways that fish often are not. Copper is lethal to shrimp even in trace amounts, which means medications containing copper cannot be used in tanks housing them. Ammonia and nitrite spikes that fish might survive can kill shrimp rapidly. If you treat a tank with medication, remove shrimp to a separate container first. Healthy Amano shrimp are active, constantly grazing, and display a translucent body with a clear stripe pattern. Opaque, milky coloring or lethargy signals stress or illness.

Preventive care for algae eaters centers on maintaining stable water quality, providing adequate supplemental nutrition, and monitoring body condition regularly. Weekly water changes of 15 to 25 percent, consistent temperature maintenance, and zero tolerance for ammonia or nitrite keep all algae-eating species healthy. For shrimp specifically, avoid copper-based medications and fertilizers containing copper. Test your tap water for copper if shrimp deaths occur without obvious cause.

When problems appear, the response depends on the species involved. Fish like otocinclus and Siamese algae eaters respond to standard freshwater treatments for common diseases like ich and bacterial infections. Shrimp cannot tolerate most medications and are better served by water quality improvement and isolation rather than chemical treatment. Nerite snails are hardy but show shell erosion in soft, acidic water, which is a chronic condition addressed by raising hardness and alkalinity rather than by medication. Across all algae-eating species, the best health strategy is prevention through consistent husbandry rather than reactive treatment after problems develop.
